have gotten Wendela and gone back to the inn in Forlani but cannot get her to kill the rats - how do I trigger this - thanks

You have the quest, yes? This is one of Indy's "let's waste the player's time" setups. Go into the cellar and chase the rats (or just stand still) for several minutes. Eventually, after a v.e.r.y. l.o.n.g. time, Wendala will offer to do the job for you. I don't know exactly how long it takes, maybe 10 minutes, but definitely long enough to take a bathroom break and even grab a snack before returning to your laptop.
