Being logical here, if the world really is going to end on the 21st December, there's no point being charged for the game, because Indy wouldn't get the chance to spend anything, so we could have it free. How about that then? No? Oh well, thought it worth a try.

Ah, it's one of those slightly ironic UK idioms.

It means that hope, like a water fountain, springs up eternally - and it is hope to think you're going to get donations "just" because the world is going to end.
