Problem with red monkey

I can't get the red monkey to stop stealing from me.
I have Quest #15 recorded in the log but not completed.

The Guide says let the monkey steal from you until a note pops up. I'm assuming this is a musical note rather than a Dear Caius note. Every time the monkey steals from me I hear the sad chink of departing coins and then a musical note pops up.
I exit and enter the room again.
I've done this about 15 times.

How many times do I have to repeat this? I'll be on the bread line soon...

I believe you have to not just exit the room, but fully exit the entire area , i.e. go back to the outside and reenter the ruins of marmaris. Then the monkey should take a liking to you. It's possible you have to finish Q #15 first. Going to check my notes now.
Edit: My notes indicate you only need to have Q #15, not that you need to have completed it. But I do remember that I was stuck with this monkey quest and the answer that was given to me was to completely exit the ruins and then reenter and that did the trick for me.
